Hong Kong: a Unique Travel Destination

This is a guest post by Daniel Moore

Hong Kong is a fascinating travel destination. From its dynamic cultural landscape to a wealth of family-friendly activities, there is something for everyone.

Hong Kong may conjure images of modern high-rise buildings and skyscrapers, but look closer and visitors will discover that the city is bursting with life. A vibrant culinary scene, family-friendly attractions, and natural gems combine to make Hong Kong a place like no other. Citizens from countries to which this policy does not apply, or those staying longer, are required to apply for a Hong Kong visa here. Indian nationals should apply online for the Hong Kong PAR (Pre-Arrival registration).

Here are just some of the peculiarities which make Hong Kong so unique.

Hong Kong has more types of mammal, insect, bird, and plant than the British Isles

The diverse wildlife of Hong Kong may come as a surprise to those who associate the name with a modern metropolis.

There are plenty of opportunities to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. Hong Kong Wetland Park and Mai Po Nature Reserve are great for enjoying time in nature and children will love spotting flamingoes and deer at Kadoorie Farm & Botanic Garden.

Hong Kong has one of the highest restaurant densities in the world

Hong Kong boasts approximately 20.4 eateries per 10,000 people, one of the highest restaurant densities on earth.

Not only is the number of cafes and restaurants impressive, but the range of food on offer is also vast. From affordable, child-friendly establishments to fine dining, Hong Kong caters to every budget and palate. In fact, Hong Kong has been ranked as the 7th Most Michelin Starred City in the world.

Cantonese cuisine such as Dim Sun and noodles are fun dishes enjoyed by children. As chilli is used in Cantonese cooking, some foods may be too spicy for kids so it’s a good idea to check ingredients with restaurant staff.

Hong Kong is home to Disneyland

Hong Kong is home to one of just 6 Disneylands around the world. Hong Kong Disneyland offers a unique experience as it is heavily influenced by Chinese tradition and superstition.

Some notable quirks of Hong Kong Disneyland are that:

  • The buildings have no 4th floor, the number 4 is considered unlucky in many East Asian cultures
  • Wood, fire, earth, metal, and water feature throughout the park to create positive energy
  • Dumplings and steamed buns in the shape of Disney Characters are served at the Crystal Lotus restaurant

The park offers all the attractions you would expect from a Disneyland resort. There are fun rides and activities to be enjoyed by every member of the family, kids also love meeting characters from Disney and Pixar films, Star Wars and Marvel superheroes.

Ticket prices and opening times can be consulted on the official Hong Kong Disneyland website.

Shopping in Hong Kong is tax-free

Most goods in Hong Kong are tax-free. The only taxable products are liquor, tobacco, hydrocarbon oil, and methyl alcohol. This makes Hong Kong a great destination for a spot of retail therapy.

All major brands have stores in the city selling everything from designer clothes and handbags to jewellery and perfume.

Causeway Bay is the main shopping area and is packed with malls, department stores, and boutiques. Kids young and old will be delighted by Hong Kong’s Lego store, a 4,000 sq ft space dedicated to the toy.

Hong Kong is also great for bargain hunting as prices at the many street markets are often negotiable.

Most tourists don’t need a visa to visit Hong Kong

Another factor making Hong Kong a great travel destination is that citizens of many countries do not require a visa.

The visa policy of the HKSAR (Hong Kong Special Administrative Region) grants visitors from around 170 countries and territories visa-free stays of 7 to 180 days.
