Top Family Friendly Hotels in Malaysia 7

One of my favourite South-East Asian family holiday destinations is Malaysia.  With its mix of stunning beaches, lush forests, delicious food, heritage sites, fun theme parks and great shopping all fuelled by a cultural fusion of Malay, Chinese, Indian and European influences – Malaysia offers something for everyone.  It’s little wonder why Malaysia is a popular destination for family holidays and Tourism Malaysia provides lots of tips on things to do in Malaysia.

No wonder you are probably thinking about booking a family friendly hotel in Malaysia through a booking site like Traveloka right now.

But which hotels are family friendly in Malaysia?

There are kid-friendly hotels throughout Malaysia.  The country of Malaysia prevails over part of the Malay peninsular with the islands of Langkawi and Penang sitting to its west, in addition, it also occupies the northern part of the island of Borneo.

Some of these features you may want from your Malaysian family holiday so I have been on the hunt to ensure the hotels I have found include as many as possible:

  • A pool
  • Splash park and/or water slide
  • A good-sized hotel room
  • Suite or family room options
  • Kids club
  • Free WiFi
  • Location

So with these features in mind these are the best Malaysian hotels I found for kids.   You may want to book a family friendly hotel in Malaysia now whilst there are some great deals on offer with Traveloka.

My Top 10 Picks for Family Friendly Hotels in Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur is the capital of Malaysia.  Finding a good family-friendly hotel in a capital city can be difficult, but I have managed to locate two in Kuala Lumpur.

  1. Le Meridian Kuala Lumpur which has a lovely looking pool with water slides, free WiFi with standard rooms.
  2. Fraser Residence Kuala Lumpur has a nice looking pool, water features with a small water slide, kids play zone with a playground and free WiFi.  But what I really like are the self-contained suites which are a great feature to have when you travel with kids that have bottomless pits for stomachs.

Sunway Lagoon

Just 25 minutes from Kuala Lumper is the Sunway Hotel Theme Park.  Staying at any of the three hotels associated with the theme park offers you a choice of room styles.  However, I couldn’t find much information about additional hotel features.  Your stay here is all about the Sunway Lagoon Theme Park and access is included with the hotel packages.  The theme park does look very impressive with water slides, rides, eateries, shows and animal parks.

Johor

If you are looking for more theme park action a stay at Legoland Hotel could be just the ticket.  Located at the southern tip of the Malay peninsular (just above Singapore); it can make a great base for you to do Legoland, Hello Kitty Town and Universal Studios (in Singapore).  A stay at the Legoland Hotel will no doubt have you feeling as if you are living in your own Lego creation.  There is a Lego inspired swimming pool, tones of Lego building activities scheduled throughout the day, free WiFi and fun themed family suites.

Sepang GoldCoast

If theme parks aren’t your thing perhaps you’re after more of a beach family holiday.  An hour and a half or so from Kuala Lumpur is the coastal strip of Sepang Gold Coast.  Here you will find the picturesque resort AVANI Sepang GoldCoast with its distinctive overwater villas that create the formation of a palm tree in the Straits of Malacca.

AVANI Sepang GoldCoast appears to be all about relaxation: swimming pool, water sports, spas, family-friendly rooms, free WiFi, lots of activities at the kids club – the kids will stay occupied and you can relax.

Malacca or Melaka

Malacca (or the Malay – Melaka) is a UNESCO heritage site and there is much to discover in this waterfront town.

Whilst there are plenty of hotel options in Malacca my pick for a family friendly hotel is the Swiss-Garden Hotel and Residences Melaka.  This hotel is centrally located in town, offers 2 large swimming pools, mini water park, a choice of hotels rooms from standard 32sqm to family 2 bedroom suites with kitchenette and free WiFi.  The only missing element is kids club.

Penang

If you are looking for more coastal destinations then you can’t beat island getaways for family holidays.

Penang island has been a favourite destination of mine and we have visited there twice, once in 2011 and again in 2014.   The first time we stayed at the Golden Sands by Shangri-La which offered great toddler facilities with a large shaded toddler pool and small water slide.  We chose a hill view room as it was larger and ordered a fold out bed.

The next time we took a family holiday to Penang we stayed at the Hard Rock Hotel Penang.  You can read my review of the Hard Rock Hotel HERE.

This hotel offers family suites, several water slides for all to enjoy, a splash park, the largest free form pool in Penang, a kids club (which we didn’t find that great) and fun poolside activities.  Plus there were several dining options with the restaurants providing high chairs and plastic crockery for the kids.

Langkawi

Langkawi island is a destination we are yet to visit, but I have done my research in hopes of a trip in the near future.  I have found 2 hotels that offer splash parks.

  1. Resorts World Langawki  is new and modern and their room prices include a free shuttle bus to Cenang Beach.  However, I cannot find any mention of free WiFi or a kids club.
  2. Meritus Pelangi Beach Resort seems to offer a bit more in their water slide department 🙂  What kid doesn’t want a choice of water slides and splash park fun?  Whilst the resort is not new it does look charming with a good choice of room options.  It is also more centrally located along Cenang Beach, provides free WiFi and extensive water sports.

Sabah

Sabah is a Malaysian state located on the island of Borneo.

In 2012 we visited Sabah staying at the Shangri-La Tanjung Aru in Kota Kinabalu – the capital of Sabah.  I have to say this would have to be one of the best family-friendly hotels I have ever stayed in.  We had a standard room that provided a fold-out sofa bed and free WiFi.  The only downfall is the location of the hotel – about a 5-minute drive from town, meaning we had to catch taxis into town to eat out, mind you the restaurants on site were very family-friendly.

The Shangri-La Tanjung Aru offers a choice of pools including an adults infinity, toddler pool and an area set aside for games.  There are also 3 water slides for all ages, a splash park, a tipping bucket and even a water balloon fight area.  The kids club is well maintained and has scheduled activities throughout the day.  The buffet offers a separate kiddy area not only in eating choices but also somewhere for the kids to go once they have eaten.

If you would like to know more and see more pop over to my review of the Shangri-La Tanjung Aru.
