Top 5 Family Travel tips
Family Travel Tip 1: Remember that you are now a family and not just a couple (or single). Don’t look at those adult only resorts thinking you will just sneak your little ones in. Staff and other guests will turn their noses up at you the entire time and your children will not be adequately entertained resulting in a terrible time had by all.
Family Travel Tip 2: When planning your holiday take into account the age of your children, their routines, and their individual personalities.
Family Travel Tip 3: For babies and young toddlers try to stick to their routine for eating and sleeping. Schedule in a family rest during nap time or take the opportunity to take turns where one of you gets to go off to do your own thing eg: visit a day spa, hit the gym or a drink at the bar.
Family Travel Tip 4: If you are changing time zones try to keep to your home time if possible. Does it matter if you are eating breakfast at 10am, lunch at 4pm and your toddler is still running around at 10pm at your destination, when at home it’s only 6pm.

My best tip for family travel is to get everyone in on the planning and make sure each person has some special event they’ve chosen that the whole family participates in.
Great tip Eryn. My son is just at the age now where he wants a say in some of the activities we choose.
We are getting down to the business end of our big end-of-year trip so I’m looking for all the tips I can get! x

Great tips although ‘keeping your home time’ isn’t always practical when you live in Australia. After twenty odd hours on a plane I haven’t a clue what my home time is.
That’s true Lyn, if you travel to far afield you can’t stay anywhere close to your home time.
Great tips, although we have never worried about keeping to our routine when we travel and our boys are very relaxed about traveling but that doesn’t work for everyone xx
Exactly Sarah, what works for one family (or even one kid) doesn’t necessarily work for the next. Just like when you first have your baby and have all those well meaning people offer you tips – take what works and applies to you and discard the rest.
Traveling with kids and especially a baby was a nightmare for us. All my babies used to follow a schedule and any travel would invariably mean a disruption in their schedule. We then decided that we should hold off any long vacation/trips until the babies are old enough.
My advice to travel with a baby is try to choose a location in teh same time zone as your home and then you can keep fairly close to the schedule of naps and feeding.
Thank you Sally for the tips. Our baby is 8 months old, and we are planning for a tour 2-3 by the car. Your post help us to plan thoroughly before moving on. I know it’s gonna be a big challenge for us. Our strategy is while baby is taking a nap or on feeding mode it is our time to rest also. No rush at all. I hope this gonna work with the help of many tips and advice it shared here. One more thing, if unnecessary things happens like accident was not our fault Courtesy cars is available through out Australia
Great tips!
