Photo Flashbacks: Outrigger Laguna Beach Resort Phuket Review 12

During August 2013 we ventured on our first TWO week family holiday to Phuket with kids.

When you are planning on spending so much of your holiday in one place it is really worth investing your time in choosing the right family accommodation for you.

So did I make the right decision for our family of 3 when we chose to spend 2 weeks at the Outrigger Laguna Beach Resort Phuket?

The Outrigger Laguna Beach Resort Phuket is located in Bang Tao Bay a 30 minute drive north of Patong.

The area was originally a tin mine then in 1984 the Laguna Resorts and Hotels took over the site and with an injection of US$200 million they turned a ravaged moonscape wasteland into a beautiful environmentally friendly tourist destination.

And wow have they done a fantastic job!

My Review of the Outrigger Laguna Beach Resort Phuket

We enter Phuket Laguna through manned gates and then wind down past green fields where people are taking elephant and horse back rides.

As we enter reception we are greeted with a cool towel and drink to refresh ourselves during the check-in process.

Then we are escorted to the beach wing where all the rooms walk out onto a lovely tranquil courtyard and into our lagoon view room.

Our Room at Outrigger Laguna Beach Resort Phuket

The room is 43 sqm – a good sized room, with a pretty view across the lagoon.  I quite enjoyed sitting out on the balcony watching sail boats and jets skis whiz by.

Due to its clever layout by incorporating a nook into a day bed or child bed, means we still have ample floor space.  They have also supplied a desk and a set of table and chairs providing us with plenty of room for Lewis to spread out his toys and us to pop our things.

The mini bar is full stocked, but the concierge asks if we would like it emptied which we agree to.  Also on the mini bar is a coffee plunger – how nice not to have to endure those foul-tasting Nescafe sachets.

The bathroom also has a clever layout by enclosing the toilet in frosted glass.  Though I have to say it was a little awkward stepping into the beige tiled Roman bath come shower.

At night when the turn down service come knocking they provide us with ice and a 200ml milk for Lewis.

The Food at Outrigger Laguna Beach Resort Phuket

Locavore Restaurant

The next morning, like every morning we head to the breakfast buffet in Locavore Restaurant.  The breakfast buffet is very similar to most resort buffets with a selection of cereals, juices, bakery items, English hot breakfast and some Asian dishes.

The staff like all the staff at the Outrigger Laguna Beach Resort are so friendly, but the staff at the Locavore outshine everyone else with their high standard of service.  They quickly learn that we prefer to sit inside due to the heat and usually have a table ready for us.

Edgewater

Many of our days are spent poolside at the resort and therefore we eat at the Edgewater cafe by the pool.  I have to say sadly the food here is a bit hit and miss, as is the service.  If you can tear yourself away from your deck chair head out toward the little row of shops on the beach and at the end you will find Tom Yum.  I cheap alternative with a great view.

The Pool at Outrigger Laguna Beach Resort Phuket

One of the reason I chose this resort was it had a water slide and I have to say it is well worth it.  We all have so much fun and I could hear squeals of delight coming from others as they speed down the water slide.

The pool is huge with areas set aside for water polo and aqua aerobics.  Other areas are a little more tranquil and away from the hive of activity.

The kids pool is also big and the perfect depth for pre-schoolers, a shame it isn’t shaded.  During the week the kids club attendees even occupy the kids at the pool with activities like diving for treasure.

During the late afternoon Candi the orphaned elephant and her handler appear to amuse the kids and adults.  You can see more of Candi HERE.

Kids Club at Outrigger Laguna Beach Resort Phuket

Lewis really enjoys participating with the kids club activities.

Most mornings at 10am there is a craft session.  Some are at an extra cost due to the nature of the activity, but I feet they are over priced eg. $25 to paint on a T-shirt.  However Lewis is still welcome to play in the club during this time.

Or on the outdoor playground.

Outside the Outrigger Laguna Beach Resort Phuket

In the evenings we eat outside the hotel taking advantage of free shuttle services offered by Laguna.  There is either bus service or ferry ride that meanders through the entire Laguna precinct stopping at each resort, the canal shops, and the gates.

The Canal Shops offer a mini mart to stock up on our supplies, over priced souvenir stores, and a laundrette.  I find the laundry service offered by one the little beach shops at the hotel to be cheaper.

Walking down from the gate there are a few shops, restaurants and a massage centres all at more affordable prices.  However after taking a couple of day/night trips into Patong we find a greater selection of quality restaurants that are cheaper.   Unfortunately it is just not economical to take the 30 minute taxi or tuk tuk ride there every night.

So instead we make use of the free shuttle services offered by some neighbouring restaurants like Black Cat and Lotus.

We find the distance from restaurants and shopping to be the only draw back of the Outrigger Laguna Beach Resort Phuket, otherwise it is a great family friendly holiday resort.
