Keeping your clothes fresh and washed while travelling is always a struggle.
20 years ago when I was backpacking I had to hand wash my clothes in a communal sink nightly, when I went camping for some reason I always end up with dirt all over me, and now I travel with kid(s) – he never stays clean. I am forever having to do a spot of hand washing to ensure those chocolate and tomato ketchup spills don’t stain.
As a result I have discovered some great products to help with laundry when travelling.
Gadgets to Help Wash Clothes when Travelling
1 Travel size detergent
When I first went backpacking I took a bar of laundry soap, this was great as it lasted for ages. Then I discovered a travel size liquid detergent – but the lid broke off after 2 uses. So now I make up my own travel size liquid detergent, or if you prefer laundry powder pop some in a zip lock bag.
2 The Scrubba Wash Bag
The Scrubba Wash Bag is a new product on the Australian market. It is said to be like a portable washing machine.
I love its:
- Easy to follow instructions
- add cloths detergent and water
- seal bag
- massage bag for a couple of minutes
- rinse clothes twice in bag
- hang on the line
- I don’t have to put my hands into the soapy liquid
- I don’t have to carry a separate container for laundry or use a communal sink
- That the water is all contained and I am not spilling water all over me and the floor
- The bag does the scrubbing for me with its wash board like material (makes it much easier as I have carpal tunnel)
- It is compact to include with my handy things to pack when travelling
3 The pegless clothesline
When I first went backpacking 20 years ago I was given 2 pegless clotheslines, ever since I have been using them when I travel. They are not only handy for hanging up the hand washing but also for hanging out wet bathers.
Scrubba also make one which is included in their Wash and Dry Kit
4 Sticky lint roller
The thing with packing clothes when you travel is that they all end up on top of each other and they get lint all over them.
This little sticky roller will have them looking pristine in moments.
5 Sewing Kit
However you won’t look pristine with a button missing or hem hanging down. So pack a sewing kit in your checked luggage for those last-minute fix ups.
So do you like the sound of that Scrubba Wash Bag?

That scrubba bag is a brilliant idea. I’ve never seen one of those before. It would have come in very handy in my backpacking days. #teamIBOT
I know exactly how you feel Renee.
OMG, I NEED that Scrubba wash bag! I’ve been doing laundry by hand during my travels for the longest time ever. #TravelTuesday
I here you Lin, hand washing is the one thing I loath about travel, so I’m looking forward to using the Scrubba from now on.
Now these are some excellent ideas for getting laundry sorted whilst travelling. I normally wash my undies in the vanity basin at the hotel and then hang them over the shower rail. The Scrubba Washbag could come in very handy!
That has been me as well Kathy, and I always splash water everywhere. So the scrubba is going to be a welcome travel accessory for our family.
Oooopsie! just entered your giveaway but I’m not based in Australia! Sorry about that! Just disregard my entry! Such a cool product though! And great tips for washing on the run. I can never seem to stay clean either 😀
Oh what a shame Lauren, I hope you gained some helpful info to stay clean on your next trip. Just to let you know the Scrubba is available for purchase internationally as well.
Wow there are some great products around to help make travel easier! Love the Scrubba Wash Bag and have entered the comp because my daughter is travelling to Florence in January where she’ll be for 4 weeks before travelling around Europe for another 4 weeks (oh how I will miss her!). Love the pegless washing line too! 🙂
Good luck with the competition Min and if you need any tips for your daughter just ask, I backpacked around Europe in my early 20’s.
I love these innovations (well one clothesline that’s been around for awhile.) The Scrubba bag is brilliant. I hate sloshing clothes around in the sink, there’s usually not a plug and things never seem to get rinsed completely. This might be a product I need for my next trip.
I’m definitely packing the Scrubba on our next holiday Elaine
Did the Scrubba bag work better than hand washing in the sink? I’ve done my share of hand-washing in the sink and it’s an acceptable alternative to the real deal. I love the pegless clothes line too! Best invention ever!
Just so much easier Amanda, of course just like you do with using a washing machine you need to give the stain a scrub before popping them in the wash. But the Scrubba makes hand washing easier.
What a brilliant invention! I could have used this when we were in Asia earlier this year.
I wish it had been around years ago as well Courntey, but now that I have one it’s a must in my handy things to pack.
Oh, I wish I had an Australian address so that I could enter this giveaway. The Scrubba looks like a wonderful invention. I always end up scrubbing the sink first (too much toothpaste, etc.) before I wash the clothes in it, and I wouldn’t have to if I had a Scrubba. Washing clothes is probably one of my least favorite parts of travel and always makes me appreciate my home laundry room when we return from a trip.
I hear you on that hand washing Michele – my least favourite part of travel as well. BTW the Scrubba is available for purchase internationally as well.
That Scrubba looks perfect to do some hand washing too. There are some clothes that I do not want to put in the washing machine and I have to wash them by hand. I have a bucket but the process is kind of messy. I will prefer to use a bag like the one you present in here.
The Scrubba would be perfect to wash those delicates that you are hand washing Ruth. I know you don’t live in Australia but the Scubba is available for purchase internationally as well.
I always take a bucket and nappy san when camping, but this is an awesome idea! I will have to look out for one.
Don’t forget to enter the competition Jess
