Depending on where you live you are either trying to hang onto the last remanent of warmth with the Fall (Autumn) days before the blasts of chilly snow settle in or enjoying the first blush of warmth with Spring.
So why not get outside and enjoy the last or first of the beautiful weather we are all experiencing no matter where we are.
But what to do with the kids for Fall trips or Spring breaks?
Well my friends at Taking the Kids and Family Travel Forum have once again put together a great selection of activities to choose from.
These are my top choices from their huge range of ideas.
Fall Trips (Spring Break) Ideas
1. Get out into nature and pick some fresh fruit and vegetables
In the US it is coming up to Halloween and that means pumpkin season, so get out there and pick your own pumpkin to carve. Here in Australia all the wonderful summer stone fruits are coming into season. why not take the kids out to your local wineries, pick some fruit and partake in some tastings made from this wonderful produce.
2. Visit a festival
Festivals are a plenty at this time of the year each offering a different theme. There is usually plenty of new foods to try to great family entertainment. Check out your local websites to find one near you.
3. Explore nearby national parks
Get the kids away from the electronics and out in into the fresh air to explore nature
4. Take a road trip and turn it into a mini project
This was a fantastic idea that I discovered on Taking the Kids fall trips web page. Take a road trip and collect leaves, seeds and nuts, then when the kids come home get them to glue the items into a book or onto a poster and write a little about them. A great way for kids to learn about your local environment.
5. Splurge and stay in a country resort
Either the snow has yet to fall or it is melting away. Take the opportunity to visit these snow resorts and explore the mountains by bike or hiking.
6. Make the most of summer fun activities
It’s still warm enough to get out onto the water and enjoy some watersports like ocean kayaking and boogie boarding.
7. Take the opportunity to travel during the off-peak season
I’ve talked about travelling in the shoulder season before. The weather is still good but fewer people have holidays available and thus prices go down to encourage those who can travel to travel. Take the chance to visit that place that has been out of your price range with its off-peak prices.
8. Explore your home city like a tourist
Visit your local tourist bureau or tourism website and find something new to see in your home town. You might be surprised with what’s on your doorstep.
9. Go on a cruise from your home port
Cruising is becoming one of the most popular forms of travel; offering a range of price structures, itineraries and lengths of travel days. There is surely something to meet your requirements.
10. Make some new friends
Whilst you are out doing all these wonderful things – get chatting to others along the way. You may just find a like-minded person AKA new friend, plus it is so easy to keep in contact with all the social technology we have available today.
I hope I’ve got you thinking about what you can do to enjoy fall or spring with the kids.

Visiting your own city like a tourist is always a fun thing to do…and often, very eye-opening.
So true Fairlie, and it’s fun to discover new things in your own back yard.
There are so many good things about both Spring and Autumn. I love travelling in the shoulder seasons – we spent April in the US and also enjoyed one of the last cruises of the season in the Caribbean in early May. We enjoyed great weather and great value. Love this list of ideas – some awesome ideas for the kids.
Thanks Kirsty. The great weather and great value are the best reason to take advantage of travelling during Spring and Autumn.
there is nothing like getting out to pick apples or pumpkins or go for a hike or explore a city on a crisp fall day here in the northeast US., especially since you know you will be cooped up for winter soon enough!
I’m the same Eileen, I just wan to hang onto summer for as long as I can before the rain sets in.
Great ideas! It is great to get out and do things even when it’s not the typical summer season. We love getting out for walks and meeting new friends. We definitely need to explore our home area, it’s often forgotten with everything else so exciting further away.
Thanks for linking up to #Whatevertheweather 🙂 x
I think our home area often gets forgotten Jenny in our enthusiasm to find something else further a field.
Love the tip about being a tourist in your home town thats definitely something we don’t make enough of! Thank you 🙂 #whatevertheweather
Glad you found the tip useful – you don’t always have to travel afar to have fun family times.
There are some lovely ideas here. I might take some on board for our half term coming up. My mum is a teacher and some of my siblings are at school still. It’ll be nice to do some of these all together.
We explored our home town like a tourist the other day. It started off as some silly fun and then we took it a bit more seriously and actually really enjoyed looking at things and in shops that we wouldn’t normally.
Thank you so, so much for linking this to #whatevertheweather. xx
Glad you’ve found some inspiration for half term Chloe.
Great advice here, I especially like the idea of being a tourist in your own town. We live close to London and rarely go into the city, and I’ve never visited The Tower of London or Buckingham Palace, but really should! Becky x #Whatevertheweather
Oh Becky you have so many cool things in your home town – go and explore!
