Whether you have been experiencing the blizzards in the USA or the blistering heat of Australia, it’s time for your family to relax and enjoy the milder weather of a spring break.
But where to go?
Well my friends at Family Travel Forum have another great list of family friendly Spring Break Ideas. These are my top 5 choices.
5 Spring Break Ideas
1. Cruising
When I was a teenager my parents took us on a cruise. It was the best family holiday we ever had! Now this was back in the mid 80’s, even then there was something for everyone to do on board including: kids clubs, teen clubs, movies, theatre performances, family activities and games.
Today cruise ships are just magnificent with: ice rinks, rock climbing walls, water parks, mini golf, plus all the kids/teens clubs. Cruising out of Florida into the Caribbean you can board the latest mega cruise ships on offer, I am so envious as here in Perth it appears that we get the older ships in the fleet.
To me those mega cruise ships just look the best in family holiday entertainment.
2. Croatia
But you don’t just have to sail out of Florida to have a great family holiday. Why not experience a new culture and history with your family while sailing around Europe including the islands of Croatia.
Steve’s and my first holiday together was to Croatia. I loved swimming in the crystal clear waters, hiking up the mountains to explore through deserted forts overlooking the beautiful harbours, walking through old ruins learning about the country’s history, and getting lost in the labyrinth of streets in the old towns of Split, Korcula, and Dubrovnik, .
3. Las Vegas
However if history is not your thing? What about an escape from reality at Las Vegas.
You and the kids will surely love the free shows like the Bellagio water fountains and Mirage’s volcano, sadly the pirate show at Treasure Island is no more.
Or maybe your family would like to indulge and go to the theatre to see Cirque du Soleil or a magic show.
If your kids want a bit more excitement then there are roller coasters, theme parks, and mini boat rides.
Though if you really feel you need to add a bit of education into the holiday take a day trip to the Grand Canyon or Hoover Dam.
4. Staycation
It could be that the thought of loading your kids into the car or hopping on the plane is just all too much, or you can’t get the leave to travel, so why not make the most of what you have on your doorstep?
Stay in the city – at home and visit the local museums.
If you live in New York (or planning to visit), there is the American Museum of Natural History. The “Nature’s Fury” exhibition looks really interesting, I am sure my 6-year-old (Lewis) would find it entertaining learning about earthquakes, volcanoes and hurricanes.
Or perhaps you are near Indianapolis, you could take the kids to the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis there are some amazing displays including “Fireworks of Glass” and “Dinosphere” – Lewis would love those.
Now whilst I’ve mentioned these great museums in new York and Indianapolis you may not live or be travelling there, so check out what exhibitions are happening in your local museum. Even here in Perth the Western Australian Museum offers a variety of changing exhibitions for kids.
5. Get Outdoors
The only problem with museums is kids often have too much energy. So if you have an energetic little one try something more adventurous like:
- Skiing, there is still snow in Colorado, Idaho and more.
- Swimming, if it’s too cold try an indoor water park like the ones in Massachusetts
- Golf, teach the kids when you are on holidays in Hawaii, Arizona, Palm springs or Myrtle Beach or even at your local golf course.
- Hiking in the national parks
- Visit a theme park like: Legoland, Universal Studios or the new Fantasyland at Disney World.
What ever it is that you choose to do with your family just enjoy the wonderful milder weather that Spring (Autumn in Australia) has to offer.

I would love to go to Croatia and am envious of my parents who are planning a trip there soon. Though I am also opening myself to the possibilities of a cruise, something I never thought I’d do.
Thanks for joining in #wednesdaywandelrust link party
I’m keen on the cruise ideas as well Malinda but it’s a matter of convincing my partner.
I would spend every day of the year at Fantasyland if I had the chance! And Vegas is awesome, like Disneyland for grown ups. Croatia looks amazing, it’s definitely on my list of places to go! This is quite the fantastic five!
Thanks Sammie. I really love Las Vagas as well – it’s not the sleezy place you would imagine
Although we’re not going until October, we are VERY excited about our Disney Extravaganza holiday to Florida. Can’t wait for the Disney cruise in the Caribbean. Great list!
Thank you Kirralee. I am so envious of your Disney cruise.
Some great ideas, thanks, Sally-Ann. I love a staycation. In fact, we’re off to the city this afternoon to spend a night in a hotel! Nothing like having a holiday in your hometown.
Thanks for sharing your post with the Wanderlust linkup. March’s edition is just around the corner – Wednesday 4th in fact. Would be great to see you there.
Jim
Have fun on your staycation Jim. I’m looking forward to the March edition of wanderlust too.
