Dreaming of Summer 10

In Australia winter has now well and truly set in.  It is cold, wet and I feel chilled to the bone.

It was only a couple of weeks ago when we had a lovely sunny day here in Perth and ventured to the beach.  Whilst I watched my son frolicking in the sun and surf my thoughts turned to wondering how our family could escape the winter and enjoy the warmth of the Northern hemisphere.

For us on the West Coast it is quite an expedition and cost to reach Europe or the Americas, so we tend to aim for Asia.  I must admit I have been enjoying our short holidays here as we have splashed about in the pool, admired the lush vegetation, walked in the local towns to partake the local cuisine, shopped at the markets, and the seen the wild life.

However if I lived on the East Coast it really wouldn’t be too far to get to Hawaii if not all the way to America and I have seen some good deals about.  I would love to take my pre-schooler there.

When I was in America a few years back (before kids) I remember the summer not being as harsh as that in Australia.  You can get out and about and explore the national parks, theme parks and antiquities.  If you live in America then these things are all on your door step.

When I was there I visited California, Nevada and Mexico I saw families enjoying the delights of their local surroundings.  They took road trips down Highway 1, stopping at playgrounds over looking the dramatic coastline.  Groups cycled through Yosemite National Park and children played in the cool waterfalls.  Parents took their children on tours of Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon.  Kids ran past me as I climbed the dazzling heights of the pyramids at Chitchen Itza and Mexico City.

There were so many ways to entertain the family.

Of course you don’t have to go on a big trip.  What about thinking what is nearby you.  Grab a picnic basket and visit your local parks, choose one with a playground to keep the kids occupied.  Go for a walk around your nearest river or lake to get some exercise, perhaps take the bike for your little ones.  Collect your swimming gear and head to the beach for a day in the sun.

And we’re back to the beach.  I can’t wait for summer to return.

What do you love to do with your kids in summer?

I love winter! So I am in no hurry for summer to return. But in saying that, I wouldn’t say no to a holiday in a warmer climate right about now……in fact, I wouldn’t say no to a holiday in a colder climate either! Any holiday is fine by me!

I love everything about summer! Going to the beach and to the zoo are my favorites. Fun for the kids and kind of relaxing for me.

Thank you for coming to link up to Travel Tuesday!

Today, we were just talking about playing on the beach on Kangaroo Island back in January and how delightfully cool it was. We’re in the midst of a blazing Texas summer right now and seem to spend too much time indoors avoiding the heat. Of course, if we were in Malaysia right now, we’d be indoors avoiding the haze.

Sally – Great piece, and we love traveling in America. There is so much to see and do – but I would love one day to get to Australia. My sister biked it with a friend years ago, and she still says she can never repay all the kindnesses.
