Black Friday is the Friday after the American Thanksgiving, which is on the fourth Thursday in November.  Whilst the Friday is not officially a public holiday many government employees and school children have been given the Friday off – meaning that it has become an extra long weekend.  Dating back from the 1960’s with all this extra traffic on the roads and footpaths following Thanksgiving the day began to be known as Black Friday.

Traditionally in the US, this marked the beginning of the Christmas shopping period.  Many stores have also felt that it is the time that their financial bottom line turns from the red to the black.  Black Friday has become one of the busiest shopping days of the year.

For us non-Americans, it has taken time for us all to join in with the promotion.  But as our world has become more global, many stores (even as far away as here in Australia) have embraced the Black Friday sales.

So this weekend there are some great bargains to be found.

I love Black Friday sales. I didn’t buy as much as I usually do but we did buy a new mattress and a few other things. Will try to do more this weekend and hopefully get most of my Christmas shopping done. #TheWeeklyPostcard

Black Friday sales are crazy all over the world, even here in Singapore (where we do not celebrate Thanksgiving!). There were people queuing up overnight to get into a big departmental store!! And, of course, there was that incident in Oxford Street in London :/ I think I prefer to shop online!
